Internal Conflict & Song Lyrics

Directions:

A. As John prepares to finally reveal his secrets to save his wife in Act III, choose any song that you think allows us as readers to dive into the internal conflict of ONE character in The Crucible Act II.

B. Choose one stanza or line from that song to dissect, pick apart and connect to the character's inner thoughts (we will never know these thoughts, because it's a play! You'll have to inference!)

Example:
Ex--Elizabeth Proctor
Song-Adele--"Take it All" by Adele
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snU9vQNOkHw&list=RD02snU9vQNOkHw
Song Lyrics:
Didn't I give it all,
Tried my best,
Gave you everything I had,
Everything and no less?
Didn't I do it right?
Did I let you down?

But go on and take it,
Take it all with you.
Don't look back
At this crumbling fool.
Just take it all
With my love,
Take it all
With my love.

Analysis:
At the opening of Act III, Elizabeth must be waiting inside the dark jail cell, cramped with the other accused witches, thinking about her mistakes, her life and especially, John. I wonder if she feels betrayed as Adele does, when all she did was be a wife who was loyal, dutiful, bearing children. Adele says  “Didn't I give it all,/Tried my best,/Gave you everything I had,/Everything and no less?”
She says "Take it, take it all" as John has not only stolen her dignity by humiliating her with his affair with Abigail; his stupid mistake, moments of lust, might cost Elizabeth her life. Her pride, her husband and her life may be taken by lust.
Take it all, take it all—will Elizabeth give her life to Abigail? Will she forfeit or stay true to her moral code?

  1. Character: John Proctor
Song: "Cold World" by Eric Reprid
Lyrics: I got nobody to lean on, got a cold hеart in a cold world
Ever since you left I don't know what's nеxt, I ain't found closure
I keep a knife in my chest just to cut hoes off, I don't know 'em

    Analysis:
For context, John Proctor attempts to win Elizabeth's love and trust back after he cheats on her with Abigail, but Elizabeth has yet to fully forgive him. When Elizabeth is sent to jail, they both realize that they need each other in order for either one to survive, hence the lyrics, "I got nobody to lean on, got a cold hеart in a cold world; Ever since you left I don't know what's nеxt, I ain't found closure". Now that Elizabeth has been put in jail, John Proctor's guilt has led him to his breaking point. Without his wife, he has no one to help him or "lean on" and now that she "left", John doesn't "know what's next" and what his future has entailed for him. The last line, "I keep a knife in my chest just to cut hoes off, I don't know 'em" talks about how John doesn't want to associate himself with Abigail anymore as she is a hoe and that she will only cause more problems for him.

    1. I loved how you explained your song choice and the comparisons made. I definitely agree, John's guilt built up and now he is the only person who can help save Elizabeth. Without her, he doesn't know what to do. Also, he did tell Abigail that he wanted nothing to do with her since she is what caused the tension between him and his wife.

    2. I loved your analysis. It’s interesting how you interpret the consequences of John’s actions as him not having someone to lean on. Even though they got closer in the end, John and Elizabeth’s relationship appeared so dry and cold that it never occurred to me that he is actually incomplete without her.

    3. I agree that this song really interprets how John was feeling by the end of Act II. He felt alone and worried for Elizabeth. It's also interesting how you connected the last line to Proctors's relationship with Abigail. John does want to stay away from Abigail since she accused Elizabeth.

  3. Character: John Proctor
Song: “Careless Whisper” by George Michael
    “I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
    Though it's easy to pretend
    I know you're not a fool
Should've known better than to cheat a friend
And waste the chance that I'd been given
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you”
Analysis: There was conflict between Elizabeth and John at the start of Act 2. John and Elizabeth begin to quarrel about her unwillingness to forgive him despite his efforts to please her. She convinces John that it is his own guilt that is tormenting him, and this proves to be accurate. When George Michael sings, "Should've known better than to cheat a friend," which can refer to John cheating on Elizabeth without realizing the consequences. Now that John has had an affair with Abigail, Abigail is sure that they are in love and would go to any length to replace Elizabeth even if that means accusing her of witchcraft. John feels that he had “wasted the chance” that he was given because after the affair, it has caused a strain in their marriage. Elizabeth has grown cold and bitter to John and because of John’s guilt, he feels obligated to please her. His guilt gets even worse when Elizabeth gets arrested because now John knows all of this is his fault and he needs to save his wife.

    1. This song choice is very wise, as it embodies John's perspective of feeling guilty and never fully receiving the emotion he wants out of Elizabeth. Katelyn's last sentence is important, as she portrays how John "wasted the chance" with Elizabeth, due to his affair with Abigail, to which he feels at fault for being incapable of saving his wife.

    2. I think this is a great song choice to really show the in terms feelings of John. We talked about how John’s guilt and inner conflict is resting deep in his heart, then it gets worse when Elizabeth is arrested to the point where he realizes that he needs to confess to the court.

    3. This song really portrays how John feels guilty for cheating on Elizabeth. I agree that after the affair, John felt like he wasted his chance since his marriage was ruined and Elizabeth will be prosecuted. I also agree that John's guilt motivates him to attempt to please Elizabeth.

    4. I really like the song choice. I think it perfectly describes John's emotions- his guilt for the affair and how he has to make things right for their marriage. I agree that he didn't realize the consequences of his actions but he truly cares for Elizabeth even if it took an affair for him to realize it. He wants to do what he can to make things right because he's never going to get what he has with Elizabeth with someone else, "The way I danced with you".

  4. Character- Elizabeth Proctor
Song- People Watching by Conan Gray
Lyrics- But I wanna feel all that love and emotion/ Be that attached to the person I’m holding/ Someday, I’ll be falling without caution

Analysis- In Act 2 when we saw John and Elizabeths’ conversation, we could tell that there was a lot of tension between them. The air was very cold and neither of them wanted to be in the positions they were in at the moment. John confessed and apologized many times and Elizabeth's feelings towards him are still complicated. It’s clear things are different for her and she feels distant from him. Conan’s lyrics show how she feels since they are a married couple but all that love and emotion they once had is gone. Because of John’s affair, there isn’t much of an attachment between them anymore. Elizabeth has been arrested and is relying on John’s protection but it seems like she doesn’t really trust him even for that. She just wants the feeling of love and emotion and protection back again. She wants the feeling of trusting someone and not being afraid back. She wants to be able to fall back and be caught. But for now, she’s only wishing for all these things back.

    1. The connection between the song and Elizabeth are incredible, as it portrays how Elizabeth lacks John's real love and has always longed for him. Especially now that she is being taken away against her will, similar to what Mahsina said, Elizabeth wants a shoulder to lean on and can only wish/hope for everything to fall into place.

    3. I loved how the song really does fit the situation well. Elizabeth is now in danger and in jail because of Proctors lust and how he let the affair with Abigail occur, she ended up being distant with Proctor. Now the only person that can really save her is Proctor and she just wants his actual love back. She wants to feel loved.

    4. I like this song choice for Elizabeth. I agree with Briana on how Elizabeth just wants to be loved although she did distance herself, and Proctor is really the only one who can get her out of the mess she's in, "I'll be falling without caution". But ultimately she just wants his love because she does feel distanced from him even after the affair- that it's just made it worse.

  5. Character: John Proctor
    Song: "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen
"Now I've done my best, I know it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come here to London just to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand right here before the Lord of song
With nothing, nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah"

Analysis: Within Act II, we are all able to ingest a peculiar form of tension created between John and Elizabeth, due to John's affair with Abigail. Despite the time that had passed between his affair, Elizabeth is unable to release her grudge, slowly becoming distant towards John. Surprisingly, John begins to share his perspective about the affair, as he perceives himself to be a moral husband, due to the form in which he spoke the truth to his wife and is trying to rebuild their relationship. Despite his ability in regaining Elizabeth's trust and protecting her, John was left in a pool of his own Guilt as Elizabeth was taken as a suspect of witchcraft. In relation to the lyrics, "Now I've done my best, I know it wasn't much; I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch; I've told the truth, I didnt come here to London just to fool you" This line connects with how John feels internally, while he continues to try his best to please his wife and be her protector, telling her "the truth" with no intention in "fooling" her (maintaining an affair) after coming clean. Opposingly, Elizabeth had been taken to a prison cell, filled with fear and denial, leaving her only hope to be no other than John. "And even though it all went wrong; I'll stand right here before the Lord of song; With nothing, nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah" To elaborate, the lyrics portray how Johns actions and hardships in leaving Elizabeth far from any drama had only been subsided as he had no form in protecting her (all still fell apart). All John has left is himself and his own judgement, leaving John to his own devices in choosing to come clean to protect Elizabeth, or extend the trial until she is saved.

    1. These lyrics in the song, in my opinion, is a wonderful reflection of how John feels. John tries to make amends with Elizabeth by being a good spouse and doing household tasks. As if Elizabeth is God, he tries to repent for his sins, but she still can't forgive him. This makes him upset, which could explain the phrase in the song "I've told the truth, I didn't come here to London just to fool you." He wasn't obligated to tell her what had transpired, but he chose to do so. Being a man at the time meant you didn't have to explain anything to women, therefore John didn't owe Elizabeth an explanation. It was more of a privilege.

  6. Character: John Proctor

Song: I Still Believe in You by Vince Gill

Lyrics: Only thinkin' of myself never lookin' back/For all the times I've hurt you I apologize/ I'm sorry it took so long to finally realize.

Analysis: Right at the start of Act II, we notice a tension between John Proctor and his wife, Elizabeth Proctor. Elizabeth knows about the affair John had with Abigail, but he doesn’t want to confess. It does become clear to us that he does feel bad for what he did, but cannot publicly confess because he doesn’t want the whole town to know he is a sinner. When the time comes for Elizabeth to be taken to jail, John realizes what his actions, and inactions have led to, and as result had inner conflicts of guilt. To relate to the lyrics, “Only thinking of myself, never looking back” describes the lust and sin that took over John to have the affair with Abigail, clearly not thinking that this would lead to his wife being accused and arrested for suspected witchcraft. Further, we could connect the line, “I’m sorry it took so long to realize” to John finally deciding to come clean to the courts, in an effort to save his wife, who he does love. Finally, “For all the times I have hurt you, I apologize” could maybe foreshadow what we will see in act III ; maybe John will give a long overdue apology to Elizabeth for his actions.

    1. I really like how you connected the lyrics to John. It's true how John was taken over by lust and sin and when he realized it was too late. Now he is trying to fix everything although it may get him into the trouble that he deserves. I like how you said the last song lyric could be a foreshadow and I really do hope he comes up with a good enough apology for Elizabeth.

I agree with you when you mentioned that John was taken over by lust when he had that affair with Abigail. Song: "Sorry" by Madonna
    Lyrics: “I don't wanna hear, I don't wanna know
    Please don't say you're sorry”

Analysis: Elizabeth relates to this song as she feels petty and bitter towards John Proctor. She resents him for having an affair with Abigail, not only does this go against morals, Ten Commandments (adultery), but also goes against the meaning of real true love for one another. In the beginning of Act 2, Elizabeth was telling John to reveal the truth, about what Abigail had said in the bedroom about the witch trials. John seemed as if he didn’t want to because it would ruin his reputation. It seems as if what Elizabeth really wanted was for truth to be spoken. Elizabeth can’t seem to forgive Proctor and tension is clearly shown between them. John confessed about what had happened and apologized but it doesn’t suffice for Elizabeth. She even goes to the point where she doesn’t even kiss him back. Like the song says, she doesn’t want to hear the apology. Now she is in an even deeper hole as she is accused of being a witch. Due to the fact that she’s in jail, now John is thinking of telling about Abigail to save his wife. Let’s see if this apology will make it through.

    2. This accurately expresses Elizabeth's feelings for John. Elizabeth was enraged when John revealed that he had an affair. Despite the fact that John had spent seven months doing errands to please her. She doesn't want to hear his apologies, and she believes that it is because of him and his guilt that their relationship is on the verge of breaking down. "Please don't say you're sorry," is a great representation  of actions speak louder than words, and what John did was unforgivable.

    3. I like the song you chose to represent Elizabeth's emotions. I agree with how you connect the song lyrics of "please don't say you're sorry" to how she has bitter feelings towards John since he goes against morals. I also like how you explain how it leads to an even deeper conflict of her being in jail as a result.

Song: “Hard to say i’m sorry”- Chicago
    Lyrics:
"It's hard for me to say I'm sorry
I just want you to stay
After all that we've been through
I will make it up to you
    I promise to"

Analysis: During act II, there was some unsettled tension between John proctor and Elizabeth. Their conversations were very dry and cold. You can see how John’s affair with Abigail has impacted his marriage. Although he did cheat, John does feel guilty and shameful for his actions. Just like the song, he is able to connect to the line where they say,'' It's hard for me to say I'm sorry I just want you to stay.” John feels guilty and he feels sorry for betraying her like that and towards the end of Act II we can see that John does love her. He cares about her and is willing to expose the truth to everyone in order to save Elizabeth. They say” I will make it up to you. I promise.” Let's see if John is able to keep that promise as well.

    1. I agree with how you're saying John feels. It's clear that he feels guilty and ashamed but it's not easy for him to show it. He just wants Elizabeth to know he regrets what he he has done and wants her to stay with him and wants their relationship to be back to normal. The lyrics go perfectly with John's internal conflict.

Quote: “You ripped me off, your love was cheap
Was always tearin' at the seams
I fell deep, you let me drown
But that was then and this is now
    Now look at me”
Analysis: Elizabeth finds out that John is cheating on her with Abigail. I believe Elizabeth can relate to Katy Perry when she says “your love was cheap” because John betrayed and belittled her by cheating on her. Towards the end of Act 2, Elizabeth is disappointed and accepts her fate, getting arrested for John’s sins. At first, Elizabeth displayed anger and emotion towards John when he admitted to cheating. However, when she is getting arrested, she shows no emotion and just gives instructions on caring for her children to Mary. Her feelings transformed from mad to emotionless/disappointed, hence “But that was then and this is now, now look at me”. She accepted defeat.

  10. Character: John Proctor
Song: “Love Is Gone” by Slander ft. Dylan Matthew
Lyrics:
“And let’s fall in love one more time
I need you now by my side…
    I can’t breathe, I’m so weak, I know this isn’t easy”

Analysis:
During Act 2 you’re able to see tension between Elizabeth and John. When Dylan says “And let’s fall in love one more time” I thought of the cold conversations and Elizabeth not kissing John back. “He gets up, goes to her, kisses her. She receives it. With a certain disappointment, he returns to the table.”(50). John knows that his cheating caused a downfall in his relationship and he just wants things to go back to the way they were before. The lyrics “I need you by my side…I can’t breathe, I’m so weak, I know this isn’t easy” represents what occurs at the end of Act 2. John realizes how bad the situation is when he sees Elizabeth get taken. All of his emotions begin to pile up and it’s suffocating. It gets to the point where he takes it out on Mary. As we enter the trials and Act 3 lets see if John is able to get that love back into their relationship while trying to protect his wife from the aftermath of the trials.

Song: "The One That Got Away" by Katy Perry
Quote: "In another life, I would be your girl
We keep all our promises, be us against the world
In another life, I would make you stay
So I don't have to say you were the one that got away"
Analysis: In the beginning of Act 2, Elizabeth was displaying resentment by the way she was speaking and acting. She wasn't saying much but it was obvious she was holding in all the pain and anger from the affair. The song lyrics relate to Elizabeth because she still loves John but was being hesitant when John tried to kiss her or have any sort of physical contact with her, "He gets up, goes to her, kisses her. She receives it. With a certain disappointment, he returns to the table.' (50). Elizabeth felt disgusted and didn't want to kiss him back because it was bothering her inside. If she wanted, Elizabeth could run away and never speak to John again but she is aware that they have children together and she wouldn't have anywhere else to go. It is even more hard for them because if the news became public, it would ruin John's reputation and humiliate Elizabeth. They can talk about the affair and try to resolve this emotional conflict between them, but to a certain extent. The tension between Elizabeth and John is the reason John starts to feel guilty and shameful. He tells Elizabeth he'd make it up to her and gets angry because he feels she doesn't understand how terrible he feels for it. If John were to make it up to her, he'd tell Abigail to stop blaming his wife, let out the truth between him and Abigail, and personally tell Abigail he doesn't love her and it was just a one time thing. Abigail is young and vulnerable so she takes out her anger by accusing Elizabeth for witchcraft. Hopefully during Act 3 John will be able to stop this and save his wife like he wishes to.

Throughout Act II John Proctor has begged for Elizabeth's forgiveness. His internal conflict is that he wants their relationship to become normal again. John feels that Elizabeth is judging him and is unhappy while being with him. The room feels cold when Act II starts and their conversations are dreary. The lyric, "I pray so much about it need some knee, pads", reminds of how people in Salem prayed to fix their conflicts. The lyric, "asking what happened to the feeling that her and me had", is how John feels internally about his relationship with Elizabeth. -David

    Song: Talking to the Moon
    Song lyrics:
    Talking to the moon
    Trying to get to you
In hopes you're on the other side talking to me too
Or am I a fool who sits alone talking to the moon?

Analysis: During the play John Proctor tries to get forgiveness from Elizabeth from his actions of cheating and not being there for her. As a result at times it feels like he could be “talking to the moon” and trying to reach the other side of it. According to the play it says “But if she say she is pregnant, then she must be! That woman will never lie, Mr. Danforth.”(92) Elizabeth was accused by Abigail, however, she tells Danforth she is pregnant. As a result, Proctor tells everyone that she never lies. This foreshadows later in the play when Elizabeth actually lies to protect Proctor. Therefore, Proctor was distraught when it happened and feels like his relationship had a lack of communication and feels some guilt.

Analysis: John proctor and Elizabeth Proctors relationship isn’t very good from the start anyways. It’s like more of a stranger talk than a love couple talk. However, if Elizabeth finds out that her husband had an affair with another girl while they were married, lots of different emotions are going to rush in and out. It would cause the relationship to have bruises and cuts, and they would eventually need to be stitched up to be forgotten and moved on.

    Song Lyrics:
I hate you, I love you
I hate that I love you
    Don't want to, but I can't put
    Nobody else above you
I hate you, I love you
I hate that I want you
You want her, you need her
    And I'll never be her
    Quote From the Book:
“You were alone with her?/ Why, then, it is not as you told me.(53-54).”
Analysis: At the opening of Act 2 there is a lot of tension between Elizabeth and John. Elizabeth knows about the affair that John had. John has been doing almost everything to make up for the fact that he cheated on her. They're talking about the witch trials in Salem and how Abigail is one of the girls who is accusing people of witchcraft. John mentions that in confidence Abigail told him it was all a farce and it had nothing to do with the supernatural. Elizabeth says, “You were alone with her?/ Why, then, it is not as you told me.(53-54).”. She still loves John even though he cheated as we learn through Act 2. Gnash says, “I hate you, I love you/I hate that I want you/You want her, you need her/And I'll never be her”. This relates to Elizabeth because we see moments where she is mad at John but we also see she loves him very much. However she feels that John wants Abigail and can't help but feel jealous.

Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'll be the one, if you want me to
    Anywhere, I would've followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you
And I am feeling so small
    It was over my head
    I know nothing at all
And I will stumble and fall
When John and Elizabeth were talking about Elizabeth being accused these lyrics are similar to what she felt when she asked John to confess. In Act 2, “would you favor me with this? Go to Abigail…John have you ever shown her somewhat of contempt? She cannot pass you in the church but you will blush”(61) This shows that Elizabeth feels like John is giving up and doesn’t believe what is happening and is really happening. Also, Elizabeth fits the end of the lyrics where they talk about knowing nothing. Elizabeth is blinded by being accused because of John and she will go to jail, since Elizabeth accused her.

  19. Character : Elizabeth and John
Song : “Cold shoulder” By Adele
Lyrics : You say its all in my head / And the things I think just don't make sense / So where you
been then? Don't go all coy / Don't turn it round on me like it's my fault / See I can see that
looks in your eyes / the one that shoots me each and every time"

    - This song relates a lot to John and Elizabeth’s relationship. Although Elizabeth was the one who was cheated on the song lyrics relate to John more. Whenever Elizabeth’s trust towards is questioned john feels guilty and asks Elizabeth to stop judging him and trust him. John does not want to keep feeling like he ruined their relationship. Elizabeth tells him that it’s all in his head and she is not judging him. Elizabeth may also feel like she is the one being blamed for the tension in their relationship because even tho she was the one cheated on she’s the one being asked to stop judging. Some parts of the lyrics relate to john and the other parts relate to elizabeth.
